Common use

Parlodel is a stimulator of the central and peripheral D2-dopamine receptors (a derivative of ergot alkaloids). It inhibits a secretion of prolactin, suppresses the physiological lactation, promotes normalization of periods, inhibits an excessive secretion of growth hormone, reduces size and number of cysts in the breast (normalizing the imbalance between progesterone and estrogen). Its high doses stimulate dopamine receptors in the striatum, the substantia nigra in brain, hypothalamus and mesolimbic system. Parlodel is used to treat infertility in some women, abnormal stoppage or absence of flow in periods, growth hormone overproduction leading to acromegaly, Parkinson's disease, pituitary gland tumors.

Antabuse: A Medicine That Treats Alcoholism

How Antabuse Works: The body processes alcohol by initially breaking it down into what is referred to as acetaldehyde. This is then broken down by another enzyme which is produced by the liver known as aldehyde dehydrogenase. The consumption of alcohol while taking Antabuse leads to the accumulation of acetaldehyde in the blood. This is because Antabuse inhibits the action of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase. High levels of acetaldehyde affect the heart and the blood vessels. This leads to flushing, an increase in the heartbeat as well as a decrease in the blood pressure. This will lead to some dizziness.
